A toy survives a toddler when it has no small removable parts, no battery door held by a single screw, and either a metal frame or no moving parts at all. We tested that claim by giving five toys to five households for three months with no instructions to be careful. Four survived. The one that failed, failed in week two.

Five families, each with at least one child between 18 months and 3 years, kept one toy each for 90 days. We asked them to change nothing about how they normally play, including the parts most testing avoids: bath time, car seats, stairs, and siblings. We collected each toy back and photographed the damage.
This is not a laboratory result. Five households is a small sample and the children were different ages. It is a real-use result, which is the part most drop-test ratings leave out.
No batteries, no stickers, no piece small enough to swallow. It went down a staircase twice and spent an evening in a bathtub. It came back scratched and completely functional. Wood dents instead of cracking, which is the whole story.
Softer than the hard plastic bricks most people picture. That turned out to matter more than expected: a toddler biting a hard block risks a chipped tooth or a chipped block, while silicone takes a dent and returns to shape. Three of the five families put them through a dishwasher out of curiosity. Nothing warped.
The shell scratched badly and the stickers peeled within a month. The frame never developed a wobble. Every ride-on we have ever had returned was plastic all the way through, which is the comparison that made this obvious.
The least exciting toy in the test and the one with the least to go wrong. No lights, no sounds, no motor. It got filthy, went through the wash four times, and works exactly as well as it did on day one.
The surprise. Magnets are usually the first thing a parent asks about, and reasonably so. This particular set used tiles too large to swallow with magnets sealed inside the frame. After three months of daily stacking, throwing, and being stepped on in the dark, not one had worked loose.
The failure that ended a toy in week two was a battery compartment held shut by a single small screw. The screw stripped, the door stopped closing, and the toy became a hazard rather than a toy. We have since stopped stocking anything with that door design regardless of price.
Glow strips were the other consistent failure. They are not built for the impact a toddler delivers without a second thought, and once the strip fails the toy still works but visibly disappoints, which is arguably worse.
Pick the toy up and imagine it dropped down stairs, chewed for ten minutes, and left in a bath overnight. If any part of that makes you wince, it will not last the month.

Not reliably. Price tracked with finish quality in our test, not with survival. The cheapest item, cloth blocks, finished in perfect working order, while a mid-priced electronic toy failed first. Build type predicted survival. Price did not.
Usually, but the real variable is whether anything moves. Solid wood with no moving parts beat everything. Wood with hinges or small glued pieces is no better than good plastic.
If a piece fits through a standard toilet paper tube, it is a choking risk for a child under three. Carry one in your bag for a week of shopping and it stops being guesswork.
For anything a child mouths, yes. Sealed silicone and solid wood both handled it in our test. Anything with an electronics cavity should never go near it, dishwasher-safe label or not.
